this was the best lunch i have ever eaten! we toured around the island for a while, and wanted to get a bite to eat in Kastro. This little taverna was incredible! The view overlooked a bay and a hill covered in old stone walls, and the food was probably the BEST I have ever had. We were playing around with camera lenses and the other pictures did not turn out. I am SO sorry. The food was ridiculously good. We had pureed fava beans with olive oil and capers… the favas were a little on the bland side, and without a salt shaker on the table, the capers had a real job to do and they did it well!!! Next we had some fried cheese that put ALL other fried cheese to shame. It was cooked in a ceramic dish that the island is known for, and had roasted tomatoes and green and red bell peppers on top. It was AMAZING, like the most perfect pizza without the crust! We also had some cheese pies (featured in this photo) which were unlike any we have had so far… delicious, amazingly flaky philo dough stuffed with fluffy, white cheese, browned to perfection, and served with a drizzle of honey. It was incredible! And last but not least, another delicious dish cooked in a ceramic vessel: roasted potatoes with olive oil, garlic, sea salt, fresh off the bush oregano and pepper. Finish it all off with some house-stilled raki (aka Greek moonshine) compliments of the waiter, and it was truly a fabulous meal!!!!!
You make me hungry! Emily, you are going to learn to prepare all of the dishes for us, right?!

Oh the Raki! Many a family get together has ended the next day with terrible hangovers with raki. And who doesn’t love that fried cheese, sanganiki. Yum!
